WATERTOWN, MA — On April 25, 2025, the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC) and the Armenian National Committee of Eastern Massachusetts (ANC-EM) co-hosted a community screening of the powerful documentary "My Sweet Land," directed by Sareen Hairabedian, in observance of the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The event, held at the ACEC, provided a meaningful opportunity to remember the 1.5 million victims of the first genocide of the 20th century and highlight the ongoing cycle of genocide by Azerbaijan against the people of Artsakh.

The screening saw attendance from State Senator William Brownsberger, esteemed clergy, representatives from various Armenian organizations, and approximately 200 community members, all gathering to honor the resilience of the Armenian people and their enduring fight for justice.

In his opening remarks, ACEC President Dr. Vatche Seraderian described the film as a cinematic journey into the heart of Artsakh, revealing the brutal realities of war, forced displacement, and ethnic cleansing while highlighting the remarkable resilience of a people who continues to stand strong despite every attempt to silence their voices. Dr. Seraderian emphasized that the film follows an 11-year-old boy growing up in Artsakh and navigating the complex realities of conflict and resilience. At a time when the world's attention often shifts rapidly, this film invites viewers to pause and reflect on how conflict uproots lives and distorts histories, and how the scars of genocide are not confined to the past; they echo in every family torn from its home and every tradition at risk of being lost. Through its compelling storytelling, the film not only documents the tragedy but also honors the strength and spirit of those who endure.

The ACEC is proud to host the screening and thanks Ms. Marga Varea from Twinseas Media for her outreach and support in showcasing this important film. Recognizing the importance of amplifying the often-unheard voices of those affected by conflict, the ACEC made the event free to the public, believing in awareness and education as powerful tools for change. By reaching a wide audience, the goal is to cultivate understanding and empathy for those impacted by war and injustice, fulfilling the Center’s moral obligation and commitment to promoting storytelling through visual arts and educating both Armenians and non-Armenians about the issues presented in the film.

Dr. Seraderian also thanked the ANC-EM for co-sponsoring the event, noting the shared commitment to raising awareness about the Armenian cause. He concluded that the film stands as a tribute to survival and a call for justice, peace, and recognition of the rights and history of the people of Artsakh.

The ACEC remains dedicated to promoting awareness of Armenian history, culture, and the ongoing struggles faced by its people through meaningful events like this.

Dr. Vazrik Chiloyan spoke on behalf of the Armenian National Committee of Eastern Massachusetts, highlighting that this year marks the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Turkish government, as well as two years since the genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Armenians of Artsakh by the Azeri government. He pointed out that, today, Armenians are struggling with the painful reality of unacknowledged and unpunished past crimes, alongside new crimes aimed at erasing their existence. He emphasized that similar films enable people around the world to learn about the Armenian struggle and understand the gravity of the crimes committed against them, illustrating that these struggles are not the result of mutual war, but that of genocide aimed at destroying our people.

Dr. Chiloyan shared a quote from the film's trailer spoken by the young boy: “How can you live with a neighbor that wants to take your country?” This highlights the constant fear endured by Armenians, particularly children growing up in Artsakh, and the constant worry their ability to return to their homeland. He urged to remain steadfast in the pursuit of justice and fight for recognition, reparations, and restoration of ancestral Armenian lands. He affirmed that there is no statute of limitations on genocide, and regardless of how long it takes, justice is on our side, and that we can succeed in our struggle only if we continue our fight. He concluded by stating that a primary objective of the Armenian National Committee and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation is to foster public awareness and support for a free, united, and independent Armenia, noting how films like this serve as vital tools to broaden public awareness and develop empathy for the Armenian cause.

Following the screening, filmmaker Sareen Hairabedian engaged with the audience during a Q&A session, providing deeper insights into the film. The event concluded with a brief reception, allowing attendees to further discuss the themes presented in the film.

           -------------------------------------

Today, we stand together not only as witnesses to history but as heirs to a tragic legacy—the failed extermination of an entire nation. Despite the nightmare of genocide, our people have found renewal and resilience in the lands of the Diaspora.

In 1915, one and a half million innocent lives were taken from us. Yet, their language, culture, art, prayers, and spiritual heritage endured. We come together today not just to remember but to reaffirm our commitment to our identity and our sense of belonging.

The great writer Moushegh Ishkhan beautifully captures this sentiment in his timeless words:

           “If my language is lost,

           I too will be lost,

Just as a river that has flowed from its source disappears into the sea…”

These haunting lines remind us that while a nation may lose its homeland, it continues to thrive as long as it preserves its language, literature, and collective memory.

One hundred and ten years later, our very existence remains a defiant message. We have borne our pain without harboring hatred, faced our loss without forgetting, and acknowledged our history without distortion.

Let this anniversary not only serve as a call to deepen our collective remembrance but also as a challenge for a regenerative struggle—a struggle against destruction, denial, and indifference. May we all return to our true roots so that the tree of our nation may stand tall.

           We remember with historical consciousness.

           We honor with moral obligation.

And we endure with unwavering national pride.

With gratitude, intellectual rigor, and steadfast commitment, we stand together.

Watertown. – On April 13, 2025, the first annual Palm Sunday community luncheon was held at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC). The event featured the esteemed presence of His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the United States, the esteemed clergy, in addition to representatives from various Armenian political, religious, educational, cultural, charity, youth, athletic, and scouting structures and organizations, and devoted community members. The atmosphere was filled with joy and contentment, highlighted by the excited faces of children at the craft table. Attendees enjoyed a delicious spread catered by anoush'ella, further enhancing the festive ambiance. The event beautifully brought together community members, allowing them to overcome challenges while fostering a culture of togetherness that strengthens relationships and unites everyone in hope, love, and a shared purpose to build a vibrant and connected community.

In his opening remarks, ACEC President Dr. Vatche Seraderian emphasized the importance of Palm Sunday in Armenian Church tradition, symbolizing Christ's humble entrance into Jerusalem representing faith, hope, and peace. He highlighted traditional observances as a way to prepare for Holy Week and promote cultural identity. Seraderian described the luncheon as a celebration of Armenian identity and announced it will become an annual event, thanking organizers and volunteers for their efforts.

In his heartfelt address, His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian drew upon the profound phrase, “If God is with me, who can be against me?” He urged everyone to remain resilient in the face of challenges, acknowledging that we will always encounter both internal and external adversities, yet we can certainly overcome them.

He reminded the attendees that if our ancestors could write and teach the Armenian alphabet on desert sand, we should take pride in our rich culture and heritage, which have been preserved and transmitted through our diverse organizational structures and institutions.

Archbishop Tanielian asserted that challenges do not weaken us; rather, they strengthen us when we come together and unite around our national and community structures. This unity builds resilience and allows us to thrive as a cohesive Armenian community, promoting a healthy national life, mind, and spirit. He commended ACEC's initiative, highlighting that events like this play a vital role in preserving our traditions. He encouraged continued celebrations together—sharing meals, laughter, conversations, and sometimes even disagreements—asserting that the strength of the Armenian people lies in their unity.
Good afternoon, dear friends, family, and members of our beloved community,
It is truly a blessing to welcome you all here today as we gather to celebrate Palm Sunday—Tsaghkazard, as we call it in our Armenian tradition. This day is more than a mark on the calendar; it is a sacred bridge between history, faith, and the soul of our people.

Palm Sunday reminds us of Christ’s humble yet triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The people greeted Him not with riches or grand displays, but with palm and olive branches—symbols of peace, hope, and spiritual victory. In the Armenian Church, we honor this moment with our own beautiful customs, decorating our homes and churches with blessed branches and gathering as a community to prepare our hearts for the solemn and sacred week ahead.

As Armenians, our faith is not something we merely practice—it is something we live. It has been the heartbeat of our people through centuries of joy and struggle, of survival and triumph. It is in our songs, in our language, in the way we gather around the table—as we do today—breaking bread not just to feed the body, but to nourish the spirit.

This luncheon is not simply a meal; it is a celebration of who we are—of our Christian faith, our ancient heritage, and our enduring sense of community. In sharing food, laughter, and prayer today, we are continuing the legacy passed down from our ancestors who understood the strength of togetherness, even in the most difficult times.

Let us take this moment to thank those who made today possible—the dedicated organizers, our wonderful volunteers, and every one of you who continues to breathe life into our community.

As we enter Holy Week, may we carry with us the spirit of Palm Sunday: one of peace, humility, and unwavering faith. May it remind us that through unity and love, we continue to grow, to endure, and to shine—just as our people always have.

Robert Smith, 86, of Arlington, MA, passed away on March 21 after a two-year battle with cancer. Born in Portland, Maine, Bob moved to Boston to begin his studies at Suffolk University. However, he took time off to work and support his education, ultimately choosing to continue working rather than pursue a degree. He was introduced to the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC), where he was offered a permanent position. He dedicated 30 years to his work at the ACEC before retiring.

Bob deeply embraced Armenian culture and built lasting friendships within the community. He was a constant presence at the ACEC, witnessing generations grow—children becoming adults, starting families, and bringing their own children into the community he cherished.

An avid reader with a passion for music and film, Bob was curious, eager to learn, and remarkably self-sufficient. Above all, he was a loyal friend who will be deeply missed.

           Dear ACEC Friends and Supporters,

As we wrap up 2024, we would like to wish our community members a blessed and joyful Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

While we celebrate this holy season of hope and renewal, we reflect on the challenges our nation has faced as of late, many of which remain. The pain of displacement and the ongoing struggle and trials of our people in the Homeland and the Diaspora remind us of the resilience and strength that define our collective spirit. We hope for brighter days for our nation and we will do our best to contribute in that.

Year 2025 marks a special milestone for the ACEC, who will turn 45! For all these years, despite many challenges, the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center continued to serve as a community hub and physical home to several key Armenian organizations that are committed to preserving and promoting Armenian culture and heritage and are integral to ACEC’s programming and community outreach. These organizations include: a) The Armenian Educational and Cultural Society (Hamazkayin), b) The Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Watertown Leola Sasouni and Cambridge Shushi chapters, and the ARS Social Services, c) The Armenian Youth Federation (AYF), d) The Armenian General Athletic Union and Scouts (Homenetmen), e) The Hairenik Association Inc., and f) St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church’s educational programs; the St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School and St. Stephen’s Saturday school. By housing these groups, ACEC plays a central role in maintaining and promoting Armenian identity within the Greater Boston community.

The ACEC also hosts activities and events of other non-affiliated Armenian and non-Armenian professional and community organizations.

May we begin the New Year with renewed spirits and sense of commitment to serving selflessly, humbly, and lovingly. There is always a need and an opportunity to better serve our mission and community despite the many challenges. Your support and kindness continue to be at the heart of everything we’ve accomplished for 45 years and our future plans, and we’re so grateful to have you as part of the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC) family.

The Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC) in Watertown, Massachusetts hosted a special event on Saturday, November 9 — the unveiling of a statue of Komitas prominently placed in front of the building.

The program began indoors to a full house of guests eager to view the statue, which was visible through the windows covered in a black cloth until the official unveiling. Displays dedicated to Komitas provided historical context and honored the legacy of the celebrated ethnomusicologist, courtesy of the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR).

ACEC Trustee Josh Tevekelian offered the background behind the statue’s donation by its sculptor Dr. Megerditch Tarakdjian, a process which began with a phone call from Dr. Tarakdjian during the pandemic in 2020 and finally came to fruition this fall.

“Dr. Tarakdjian, on behalf of our community here in Boston and the ACEC, I want to thank you many times over for this tremendous gift and generous consideration bestowed upon our community,” Tevekelian said.

Dr. Tarakdjian is based in Montreal, Canada, and has honed his sculpting artistry over the last 25 years. His works can be found in private collections and on public display around the world. To name just a few: a monument to the iconic Armenian-Canadian photographer Yousef Karsh stands in Ottawa; the first ambassador of Armenia to the United States Armen Garo in front of the Armenian embassy in Washington, D.C.; and a statue of Paruyr Sevak in Zangakatun, Armenia, the poet’s birthplace.

Tevekelian also offered thanks to Toros Vosbikian, who sponsored the beautification of the area where the statue is located as well as the expense of its installation in honor of his father Hampartsoum Vosbikian, a friend of Dr. Tarakdjian.

Komitas and his legacy are well-known throughout the world, and in honor of the occasion, ACEC Board chair Dr. Vatche Seraderian highlighted his life and his contributions to the Armenian community and beyond.

“Komitas is often called the father of Armenian music,” Dr. Seraderian said. “His contributions go far beyond music, touching the soul of Armenian culture and identity. He was an ethnomusicologist, a composer, a singer, a musicologist and a priest. But above all, he was a visionary.”

Throughout his difficult childhood and later tragedies, Komitas’ talent was evident to those around him. “Komitas was a cultural pioneer who gave Armenia a musical voice. His efforts to preserve Armenian folk music ensured that Armenian culture would endure despite hardships and adversity. His music remains a bridge that connects Armenians to their roots and serves as a reminder to the strength and beauty of Armenian culture,” Seraderian concluded.

Following heartfelt remarks by Dr. Tarakdjian about the significance of the statue and his desire to donate it to the ACEC, pastor of St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church Very Rev. Fr. Hrant Tahanian addressed guests.

Very Rev. Fr. Tahanian explained the change in how the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide are remembered since the two Catholicoi canonized them in 2015 during the centennial, an “unprecedented event, because never before had such a large group of individuals been sanctified and canonized all at once.” Now, we pray to the sainted martyrs for intercession and they are celebrated, which included the composition of new hymns, he explained. One of the acolytes of Komitas, Archbishop Zareh Aznavorian of blessed memory, wrote a “masterpiece dedicated to our martyrs” in 1990, 25 years before canonization, in anticipation of the monumental occasion.

“Sadly, we did not have enough time to get accustomed to this new approach, because a few years later the Artsakh War started in 2020 and ended with the full exodus of the Artsakh population,” Very Rev. Fr. Tahanian said. He noted that on the eve of COP29 being held in Baku, November 10 had been designated by both Catholicos Karekin II and Catholicos Aram I as an international day of prayer. “As the Azerbaijani government continues to try to whitewash its crimes, we do not give up,” he said.

Very Rev. Fr. Tahanian then invited everyone outside for a brief prayer service and blessing with honored clergy Archpriest Fr. Antranig Baljian, Rev. Fr. Arakel Aljalian from St. James Armenian Apostolic Church, Very Rev. Fr. Ghazar Bedrossian of Holy Cross Armenian Catholic Church and Rev. Avedis Boynerian and the ceremonial unveiling of the Komitas bust.

Greater Boston is home to many ethnic communities that create a kaleidoscope of cultural diversity, and Watertown is a microcosm of that diversity. Armenian immigrants who first settled in this area during the end of the 19th century are an integral part of this cultural mosaic. Today, over 50,000 Armenians are living throughout the Greater Boston area in towns such as Watertown, Belmont, Waltham, Arlington, Lexington, Cambridge, Brookline, Newton and Boston with an annual purchasing power of over one billion dollars. This annual festival brought together the large community to celebrate the Independence of Armenia and to promote our culture.

For over two decades, the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC) held Golf Tournaments that helped raise funds for the Center and the St. Stephens Armenian Elementary School. With over 100 participants at each tournament, this program helped cultivate and strengthen relations and friendships, and create a support community that is second to none. The ACEC is very proud of the Golf tournament track record and the constant raising of six figure funds for both deserving institutions.
